District Profile

S.N. Farming System/Enterprise
1 Dry Land or Rainfed Farming
2 Arid Horticulture
3 Animal Husbandry

Description of Agro-climatic Zone & major agro ecological situations (based on soil and topography)

Soil Type

S.N. Agro-Climatic Zone Characteristics
1 Zone Ic-Hyper arid partially irrigated zone The zone comprises of the district Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Churu (Tehsil Sujangarh, Ratangarh, Sardarshahr and Bidasar), the zone is characterized with dry plain area partially irrigated with IGNP and deep tube wells. The zone consist desert soils covered with sand dunes. The soils of the zone are mainly Sandy Loam to coarse sand. Rainfed cultivation of pearl millet, moth bean, cluster bean, etc is done on stabilized sand dunes and plain area. In a few pockets, irrigation facilities are available.

Topography

S.N. Agro Ecological Situation Characteristics
1 Hyper arid partially irrigated western plain Total area is 7.70 M ha in which 2.44 M ha is net sown . Annual rainfall is erratic (328 mm). The maximum and minimum temperature varies from 48oC to -2.7oC Major Crops: - In kharif mostly rainfed crops like pearl millet, moth bean, moong bean and cluster bean are grown. In rabi wheat, Barley, Mustard and chick pea are grown where irrigation facility is available.

Soil Types

S.N. Soil Type Characteristics Area in ha
1 Loamy sand Most of the area in the district falls under this category. Soils are having low water holding capacity and poor in fertility status. Only kharif crops are grown. 45%
2 Sandy Soil High longitudinal sand dunes are spread in the district. These shifting sand dunes restrict the crop production to stabilized sites only. These soils are very poor in organic carbon as well as other essential plant nutrients. 30%
3 Sandy Loam Soils are poor in organic carbon and water holding capacity having very less vegetation. These soils are suitable for conserved moisture farming. 17%
4 Saline/Alkaline soils Soils irrigated with underground water get salts accumulated and become problematic. Under such soil conditions only salt tolerant crops are raised. 3%
